static lines that danced now and then

static lines that danced now and then (2012) is a decision based piece for two or more players of any instrumentation.

Between 1965 – 1971 the American composer James Tenney produced a series of ten short pieces printed on postcards.

In ‘static lines that danced now and then’ I have attempted to write a sustained piece of music for 2 or more instruments that contains just enough information to set each performer on their journey through the piece.

There are no clefs, no defined rhythms, key signatures, time signatures or fixed tempo. In fact there is no “correct” orientation for the score. Instead, there is a branching diamond which acts as a map, one that each performer must navigate their way through, making decisions as they go, all of which fits neatly on a 6 x 4 postcard.
